When I was hiking the Portuguese Camino this past March 2023, I began to think about my 8.5 years of complete remission from Lyme Disease, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Bipolar Disorder and other serious medical issues. I still can’t believe that I am living my best life with zero pain in my body, no pharmaceuticals and great energy at the ripe old age of 60. Here is a good summary of everything that I did to recover 20 years of chronic illness.

But what about my eyesight?! Why hadn’t my eyesight healed or at least improved a little? I mean this made no sense to me at all. I had been wearing prescription glasses for over 50 years. What was I missing?

When the student is ready the teacher will appear

There is a saying, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. So I began researching how to heal my eyesight naturally. This led me to endmyopia.org

In a nutshell, the process I’m following involves a very gradual reduction of one’s prescription lenses. Kind of like weaning yourself slowly off of anti-depressant medications.

My 30% Reduction in SPH and 30% Reduction in Cylinder (Astigmatism) in 4.5 months

March 15, 2023
R SPH- 3.0 CYL – 1.5
L SPH – 3.5 CYL – 1.0

August 4, 2023
R SPH – 2.0 CYL -1
L SPH – 2.50 CYL – 0.5

12 Tips to Healing your Eyesight Naturally

1/ Reduce slowly

I have reduced 6 times (.25 only, each time) alternating between SPH and CYL (Astigmatism) reductions. Research indicated that it wasn’t a good idea to reduce both focal planes at the same time. Once the eyes had adjusted to each reduction and my vision was clear and crisp, then I made another reduction. So basically, your eye glasses are slightly under-corrected so that your eyes have to work a little bit harder to clear a small amount of blur. It is very important to go slowly.

2/ Order weaker glasses for close-up work

These are called differentials. I began with 1.5 diopter lower in each eye. Ideally your close-up glasses should be just strong enough so you can see 60 cm from your computer screen.
My close-up glasses for computer work
R SPH – 1 CYL – 0
L SPH – 1.25 CYL – 0

These could have been a little stronger but I am able to do close-up work just fine at 50 cm from my laptop. I completely dropped the CYL (astigmatism), as I always took my glasses off for close-up work in the past.

3/ Reduce phone and computer screen time

This is very important. We live off-grid and don’t have cell service, so I only use my phone when we go into town to shop once or twice per week for maybe 1 hour. I use my laptop on average for 4 hours per day, as I work online. I have drastically reduced social media and other mindless surfing.

4/ Implement active focus

This is just learning how to clear a small amount of blur when looking at objects or signs in the distance. Each drop in prescription should never be greater than our ability to clear the blur easily. Otherwise, a person can just become blur-adapted.

5/ Healthy Diet

I eat very healthy with almost no sugar or processed foods. We eat a paleo diet with lots of organic animal protein, vegetables and healthy fats. Your eyes, like the rest of your body, need lots of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and water.

6/ Understand the cause of astigmatism

It is important to move your eyes and head at the same time. I had a very bad habit of sitting at my computer with my chin cupped in my left hand and elbow resting on my desk. While I read the computer screen my eyes were moving back and forth and my head was in a fixed position. Be mindful of these types of behaviours. My astigmatism is healing slowly, as the cylinder corrections have to adjust over longer periods of time.

7/ Daily eye exam

A quick eye test with the Snellen Chart to ensure 20/20 vision. Ours is hanging permanently in our dining room. When my vision improves to 20/15, then it is time to reduce again.

8/ Practise the 20- 20-20 rule

This involves taking a 20-second break from looking at a screen every 20 minutes. During these breaks, I look out my window at the trees which are more than 20 feet away, which relaxes the eye muscles.

9/ Reduce the use of sunglasses

My view is controversial, but my eyes are now completely bright light-adapted. I wore my very cool Raybans for all of my outdoor activities over a 20 year period. However, I discovered that when sunlight enters the eye, it signals the brain to produce melanin and hormones; it also affects the pineal gland. I now understand that constant use of sunglasses was not great for my eyes or general health. I am going to order an appropriate sunglass prescription for driving only under difficult conditions, such as facing the setting or rising sun.

10/Spend a minimum of 3 hours per day outdoors

We run a small homestead, so this one is easy for me. We love hiking, fishing, gardening and all of this distance viewing is very healing for your nearsightedness.

11/ Get your sleep

It is really important to sleep and let your eyes and body fully rest up each night. Aim for 7-9 hours each night. Your eyeballs will thank you!

12/ Order your glasses online

Just buy basic frames with minimal extras and pay between 30 – 50 dollars per pair. This makes it very affordable to continuously make your reductions. Zenni.com is where I buy mine.

Nearsightedness Is Not An Illness (But A $100 Billion Business)

I have no doubt that I will be glasses-free in another year or two. I am still in shock at this process and how my eyes are healing. Most of us don’t need to continuously wear glasses but we do need to change our close-up habits. Reduce screen time, and for heaven’s sake get outside. That is really where the magic happens!

I hope this article inspires just one other person to take the necessary steps to heal their eyesight! I am beyond grateful for this new knowledge and experience of how the body can and will heal itself if given the right help.

My hiking holiday in Guatemala

I was the oldest woman in our group of 50 to climb Volcán Acatenango, the 3rd highest volcano in Central America. We also climbed Pacaya , Indian Nose and walked countless miles exploring Antigua and Lake Atitlan. I stayed in hostels and explored by horse, chicken bus, shuttle busses and my own two feet. It was a very active holiday and one of my most favorite. The food was amazing and the Guatemalans are such lovely people. I truly felt strong, happy, joyous and free. Hiking is still my most favorite thing to do no matter where I am in the world.

Life in Merida

My most of the time home 1 year ago was Merida, Mexico. There I enjoyed rich culture, museums, stunning architecture, great food and lovely people. Merida is very inexpensive with both food and housing. The downside was a crippling hot climate, traffic pollution and insanely hungry mosquitos that no amount of natural bug killer could deter. I enjoyed wonderful friendships and an active social life. Life was good!

The beginning of Covid-19

Overnight Merida began to shut down. The Paseo Montejo where I walked every single day just shut down. The cafés, shops and restaurants all closed and this once busy street now had this eerie silence. No one was out walking anymore. Just me and the odd police car. I didn’t know what to do. Prime Minister Trudeau, was calling Canadians back to Canada. I began praying for direction. Flights back were insanely expensive and I just couldn’t imagine packing up my entire house and leaving. I didn’t know what to do. So I waited.

At 5 am on Thursday, March 19 I bolted upright out of a deep sleep. I knew intuitively and decisively in that moment that I had to leave Mexico as soon as possible. By 11 am that morning I was deep into a household sale. I posted my things on FB and got rid of everything or gave it away in 3 days. My flight kept getting cancelled and Air Canada’s website kept crashing. I was in a state of panic.

My husband Tony was able to get me a flight booking from Canada. We had been separated for 4 years but we remained close friends and he was always there for me.

There were rumours of the bus lines shutting down so I decided to spend one night in Cancun to be closer to the airport. I stayed in a hotel with over 60 rooms and there were only 2 rooms booked. It was like a scene from an apocalyptic movie. My close friend Stacey spent the afternoon and evening with me. We walked around downtown Cancun and everything was closed. I was so grateful to her.

In shock and exhaustion I boarded my plane on Monday March 23, 2020. I crammed 6 years of life in Mexico into 2 large suitcases and 2 carry on bags. The Canadian government sent extra planes to collect tourists. It was absolutely surreal and the mood on the plane was low. Not one person dared to cough or sneeze.

Arriving in Canada and Quarantine

Tony picked me up at the airport around 7 pm in Ottawa. He was one of the few that came to meet us travellers. You could see that no one was wanting to go to the airport as people were still unsure of the impact of this virus.
We arrived home and began our 2 week quarantine. Tony and our son Nick quarantined with me for 2 weeks. Now that is love and I was so grateful to both of them. Nick kept us both laughing and Tony prepared unbelievable meals. We were safe and cosy and I was so grateful for their love and care.

Shock

I was in a complete state of shock for the first 2 weeks of returning to Canada. I woke up every 2 hours, full of anxiety. Every now and then I would just break down and cry. I stopped watching mainstream news and began preparing for my new life in Canada. It took some time but slowly I began to sleep through the night again.

Bought and sold a trailer on Round Lake

Tony and I both figured that I would only stay with him until the lockdown was over. I bought this neglected travel trailer on a gorgeous lake. This was the perfect distraction and we spent many hours painting, sanding, washing and ripping up old carpets. The campground changed rules and was now only allowing children under 18 to stay for visits. I wanted our son to be able to spend time at the lake so I sold it. It really was a special place and it sold in one weekend after a bidding war.

Feeling homeless

I knew I needed to find a permanent home in Canada. This consumed me. Again I was waking up at night. I kept praying and asking for direction. I couldn’t afford to buy anything in Ontario, Canada. I wanted to live as independently as possible without any loans or mortgages. My criteria was clean air, low emf exposure, clean water and the ability to grow food. I widened my search and found a really, really sweet off grid river-front cottage on 1.5 acres in Quebec. I placed a much lower bid and it was accepted. This property is like a dream come true for us. This is the view from our deck. Beautiful and serene.
At this time Tony and I were not reconciled but with time and healing we reunited with much love and commitment.

Our move

In September, 2020 we packed up and moved out to our new home. It is the most idyllic setting and we absolutely love it. We are completely off the grid and rely on wood heat. Propane is used for our kitchen stove, refrigerator, and clothes dryer. A small freezer, dishwasher, lights, computers are all run off of the solar panels. We also have a generator for the cloudy days, weeks and dark winter months. There is very good fishing and hunting in this area. We had several large pines cut down as several were diseased and dead. This has completely opened up our land for gardens and fruit trees.

It has been a very steep learning curve. Tony is one of those guys that can fix almost anything. He is the one that understands how this place runs. All I know is that when the sun shines I can slow cook soup bones and wash clothes.

Dealing with Co-vid

Like most I experience a wide range of emotions dealing with this virus. We have made staying healthy our number one priority. We take several daily supplements and live a very healthy lifestyle. I am not afraid of Covid or any other infection, as I make my health my number 1 priority. I will not be getting any vacks**ine. In my opinion there is no reason to get an experimental shot for a virus that has a 99% recovery rate. When I left allopathic medicine 8 years ago, I began to heal and completely regain my health. My intuition tells me not to do this. I have seen too many injuries and deaths from this v acks**ine, so have decided it is not the right choice for me. I wear a mask once per week when we shop for groceries as we are mandated to do so.

My faith is stronger

My faith was tested so many times in the last year. But things always work out when I pray and ask for direction. Every day I turn my will and my life over to the care of God. I know that He knows what is best for me even when I don’t. In faith we are walking through this Covid madness. I still believe everything will work out for the best but the world may need to suffer deeply before this happens.

Goals for 2021

We are going to build many raised beds for our vegetable gardens. Set up our greenhouse and get busy raising chickens. It is our hope that we can become as self-sufficient as possible. We eat 6 eggs each day so it would be amazing to have our own healthy free range supply. We go through a ton of veggies and are looking at building some kind of cold storage for next winter. We are really excited about all of these upcoming projects. Food security is very important in these troubling times that we find ourselves in.

Hopefully we can travel again. This is the one thing that I miss the most. But our health and safety must come first.

My maintenance protocol

I would have to say despite the stress of the last year I feel pretty good. I live each day pain-free, fairly fit and active for a 58 year old woman. My mood is good and and my outlook is bright.

Our diet remains paleo with intermittent fasting. We either have a soup bowl or big salad for the first meal (11 am) and some type of cooked organic free range protein for dinner (5pm) with lots of veggies. We bought a side of beef and about 20 chickens. Typically we have organ meats at least once per week. Tony is an amazing cook and loves to eat this healthy way. Almost every meal we look down at our food and marvel at how well we eat. The only reason we have to drive into town every week is to buy more vegetables.

Supplements I take are digestive supports, cod liver oil, magnesium, whole food multi vitamin, dessicated liver pills, Vit d3/k2, nutritional yeast, iodine and a multi mineral.

I still do a thorough parasite cleanse every 6 months with my recipe. You can find the recipe here.
Every year I do a hair test to keep an eye on my mineral levels.

Despite the cold temperatures we try and get out for a 4-5 mile walk at least 4 times per week. I would say I am better cold-adapted than I was 4 months ago. We love to get a good sweat on at least once per week in our woodfired sauna.

I also try and do some resistance training the other 2 days each week. There are lots of YouTube videos with many different exercise videos.

If you are still sick

You can recover your health. The problem is most humans have strayed so far from a healthy diet and lifestyle. If you are still struggling you may need to find the last pieces of your healing puzzle. There are many pieces to fix before good health can return. You have to take away all of the bad stuff and add in a bunch of good stuff. Take a look at this older article. It might give you some clues. Never give up and keep the faith!!

This was the game-changer for me while fighting Lyme and Co-Infections, CFS/Fibro and 20 years of chronic illness. My hair tissue analysis revealed several minerals that were very low despite eating a conventional Paleo diet for the first few years. This is the most nutrient-dense breakfast that I have found so far. It is packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. Since many of us with chronic illness are nutritionally depleted, this breakfast is a great way to boost much-needed nutrients. One year after adding these smoothies and switching to the Wahls Paleo Diet, my minerals levels were all in the acceptable range. I usually have 2 or 3 boiled eggs, a tablespoon of fish oil and my smoothie each morning. This provides a more balanced breakfast with healthy fat, protein and carbohydrates.

My Recipe

The nutritional information was found at The World’s Healthiest Foods.

Romaine Lettuce– 2 cups– Romaine lettuce is an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids), vitamin K, folate, and molybdenum. In addition, romaine lettuce is a very good source of dietary fiber, manganese, potassium, biotin, vitamin B1, copper, iron, vitamin C, vitamin B2, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B6, phosphorus, chromium, magnesium, calcium, and pantothenic acid. It is also low in oxalic acid.

Celery– 1.5 stocks-Celery is a rich source of phenolic phytonutrients that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Celery is an excellent source of vitamin K and molybdenum, folate, potassium, dietary fiber, manganese, and pantothenic acid. Celery is also a good source of vitamin B2, copper, vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and vitamin A.

Cucumber– ½ large-Cucumbers are an excellent source of vitamin k, molybdenum, pantothenic acid, copper, potassium, manganese, vitamin C, phosphorus, magnesium, biotin, and vitamin B1. They also contain the important nail health-promoting mineral silica.

Avocado– 1 whole-Avocados are a good source of pantothenic acid, dietary fiber, vitamin K, copper, folate, vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin E, and vitamin C. Although they are fruits, avocados have a high-fat content of between 71 to 88% of their total calories—about 20 times the average for other fruits. A typical avocado contains 30 grams of fat, but 20 of these fat grams are health-promoting monounsaturated fats, especially oleic acid. This fat content helps to keep that nice full feeling for several hours.

Carrots– 1.5 large-Carrots are perhaps best known for their beta-carotene content. In addition, they are a very good source of biotin, vitamin K, dietary fiber, molybdenum, potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. They are a good source of manganese, niacin, vitamin B1, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, folate, copper, vitamin E, and vitamin B2.

Orange–1 whole– Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C. They are also a very good source of dietary fiber, B vitamins including vitamin B1, pantothenic acid, and folate as well as vitamin A, calcium, copper, and potassium.
Or
Pineapple– 1 cup-Pineapple is an excellent source of vitamin C, manganese, copper, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, dietary fiber, folate, and pantothenic acid. It also contains bromelain which is a proteolytic enzyme that can break down the formation of biofilm in the gut. Note – If you are worried about the amount of fructose you can use berries, green apples or any other 1 cup serving of fruit. This was the only fruit I ate each day while I was healing.

Parsley– 1/4 cup-Parsley is an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin C, chlorophyll, vitamin A, folate, and iron. Parsley is excellent for kidney cleansing and liver detoxification.

Moringa– 1 tsp– Moringa is overflowing with vitamins A, B, C, D, E and minerals including potassium, calcium, iron, selenium, and magnesium. It is strong tasting so play around with the amount. Moringa can be optional.

Water- 6 – 10 oz of purified water. This can be adjusted according to the desired thickness. I don’t use a lot of water because I like mine thick so I can eat it out of a bowl.

Optional – Play around with other things like beets, berries, apples, soaked pumpkin or sunflower seeds.

When I was very sick and going through heavy Lyme and parasite cleansing I often did a green smoothie fast for a day or two. I would eat as much smoothie as I wanted and it really helped to clear the body of die-off toxins. Go ahead and give it a try!

Chop your beets into 1/2 inch cubes. Do not shred as this will cause the beets to ferment too fast and the result might produce alcohol instead of lactic acid. I use a large 2-liter jar but you can use any size. I fill the jar 1/3 with beets.

1 tablespoon grated ginger

1 tablespoon grated orange peel

1 tablespoon of sea salt

2 probiotic capsules

Filtered water

Place everything in the jar and fill with water. We leave about 1.5 inches of air space in the jar. Stir everything together and then add the probiotics last. Give one last gentle stir. Cover and let sit on your counter for 48 hours. We prefer this recipe with the probiotic capsules because it reduces the fermentation time. Many recipes call for whey but we stopped using all dairy and no longer make kefir. We also make our sauerkraut with the probiotic capsules. Once you have some kvass you can just use 1/2 cup to innoculate your next batch.

Some people will empty the kvass and refill with water for a second batch. This will work but the second batch will not be as strong. I like to think that I am worth a fresh round of beets with every batch. Smiles

I can attest to the amazing health benefits of beet kvass. I have experienced the bowel cleansing benefits as well as a major increase in energy. I enjoy walking several miles per day and find my pace and distance has greatly increased since the addition of kvass and other probiotic-rich foods like sauerkraut. This is a good option if you do not have access to raw goat/cow yogurt or have to avoid fermented dairy due to a casein intolerance/allergy. This has been such a blessing to find an easy, inexpensive probiotic food.

Helped with Anemia

Another benefit is the blood alkalizing and nutrient density of kvass. Since I have struggled with babesia (malaria-like protozoan) and anemia I feel that kvass is an excellent maintenance and support for the blood as beets are high in vitamin c, iron and copper. The body needs all three to build new blood.

“Beets are unique in their rich combination of betalain pigments. Both betacyanins (red-violet pigments) and betaxanthins (yellow pigments) can be found in beets. Betanin and vulgaxanthin are betalains that have gotten special attention in beet research. Beets are also an excellent source of folate and a very good source of manganese, potassium, and copper. They are also a good source of dietary fiber, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin C, iron, and vitamin B6”.

The Wahls Paleo Diet is the diet that turned me around in less than a year. This eating plan has kept me in complete remission from Lyme Disease and co-infections since November 2014. I also treated the Lyme Disease with Stephen Buhner’s Herbal Protocol and had completed an extensive parasite cleanse. My parasite recipe can be found here. You can read about everything else that I did to recover my health here.

My health was terrible when I started the diet. I had been chronically ill for over 20 years and given a CFS/Fibro diagnosis and finally Lyme Disease. I was completely disabled, housebound, overweight, hypothyroid, weak, exhausted, anemic, had debilitating pain, chronic migraines, and horrible digestive issues. I had been eating a protein and fat heavy Paleo Diet with very minimal improvements. Just prior I was a raw foodist, near vegan for over 3 years. Hair tissue mineral analysis revealed many mineral deficiencies, which is not unusual for anyone with chronic infections. My digestion was terrible and I could only eat about 5 foods. I had to go on a cooked food diet for the first 6 months. My stomach burned just from drinking water.

I was looking for a diet that would provide me with all of the recommended daily amounts of vitamins and minerals – a diet that would heal my gut so that I could rebuild my immune system. I wanted every single bite of food to be packed with healing vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and essential fatty acids. A diet that would heal my broken biochemistry. I already knew that real food was powerful medicine.

I became instantly drawn to the work of Dr. Terry Wahls, whose nutritional research led her to develop a diet to treat her own secondary progressive Multiple Sclerosis. The disease had left her confined to a tilt recline wheelchair for four years. She had tried many of the conventional drugs for MS available at the time with little success. As a physician-scientist, she created the diet and lifestyle which brought her out of her wheelchair and able to bike 18 miles within 9 months. The Wahls approach of eating the most nutrient-dense real food made sense to me, and I purchased her book “The Wahls Protocol”. Watch Dr. Wahls’ Ted Talk, Minding Your Mitochondria! It is fantastic!

Since I was already eating Paleo (with many dairy “cheats”), the transition wasn’t that difficult. This is a basic outline of what I would be eating each day:

3 cups of dark green vegetables – romaine is my preference

3 cups intensely colored vegetables: 1 cup red vegetables/fruit, 1 cup blue-black vegetables/fruit, 1 cup yellow/orange vegetables/fruit

3 cups of sulfur-rich vegetables: Mushrooms, onions, shallots, garlic, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and bok choy

Seaweed for iodine and trace minerals- I take 6 kelp tablets per day.

Omega 3 rich foods – Wild fish and seafood, cod liver oil

Eat organ meats (offal) once per week. (We eat beef liver covered in onions once per week).

Regular bone broth – We were already making a slow simmer 48-hour beef broth. My new favorite broth is made from chicken feet for lots of collagen.

Fermented foods or a probiotic – sauerkraut and beet kvass.

So how was I going to eat 9 cups of fruit and vegetables each day? The addition of a green smoothie every single morning would boost my fruit and vegetable intake easily.

Note- Dr. Wahls suggests eliminating eggs for a 30 day period and then re-introducing them if there is no reaction. I stopped eating eggs for about 2 months and added them back without any negative symptoms. I continue to eat pastured eggs almost every day.

My Typical Day

Breakfast/Lunch – 11 am – This first meal is usually one of the following:

1/Super healthy Green Smoothie. In addition, I often have 3 boiled eggs on the side.

2/ Real Food Rebel Soup for Chronic Illness.

3/ Large Salad– A large salad with lots of different greens, carrots, purple cabbage, cucumbers, olives, onions, peppers, slivered beets, jicama, boiled eggs or leftover meat. I top this off with my Easy Salad Dressing Recipe.

Dinner – 5 pm – This is usually a completely cooked meal of grass-fed meat, organic free-range chicken, or wild-caught fish along with lots of cooked sulfur-rich vegetables. I love cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts. If these are steamed I cover them in butter.

Intermittent Fasting – This eating/fasting schedule is what comes most naturally to me now. I really try not to eat anything in between these meals. I have the most energy and clarity when I stick to this schedule.

Additional supplements that I take with meals – Betaine HCl, digestive enzymes, magnesium, whole food multi-mineral/vitamin, kelp tablets, cod liver oil, desiccated liver pills when I travel, copper or manganese (according to hair tissue results) and moringa in my smoothies.

Within one month of integrating the green smoothies into this diet I began feeling better; I was warmer, less fatigued and my head was clearer. I was hooked! I have never measured out my food but eat until satisfied and try to fulfill many of Dr Wahls’ dietary suggestions.

Within 6 months I was able to walk five miles, swim daily, begin resistance training, and lost over 20 lbs. Constipation, intestinal pain and chronic infections are no longer a problem.

This is my very first hair analysis from December 2011. I was housebound at this time and extremely sick. My mineral levels were almost nonexistent. I was a near vegan and raw foodist from 2009 – 2012.

The results of my hair tissue mineral analysis were much improved after one year on this diet. If you click on the test it will enlarge. The levels on the bottom show the results from Sept/2014. The upper value shows the most current levels taken Aug/2015. You can see how several minerals have improved in only 11 months. My mineral levels are now within the acceptable range.

Here is my most recent hair test from August 28, 2019

Although this test is good it might have been a little different had I not backpacked for a month in Peru. I completed the 4 day Inca Trail and climbed Rainbow Mountain. Physically challenging to say the least and my adrenals were screaming for weeks afterward. I’m sure I burned through a lot of minerals. Currently, I am working on boosting levels and trying to get manganese a bit higher. My thyroid function has improved and body temperature is normal since incorporating this way of eating. My hair, skin and nails have greatly improved. My last blood results showed an excellent red blood cell count and ferritin levels. Prior to this, I had struggled with anemia my entire life.

Initially, I went from 165 lbs to 115 lbs. The second picture was taken in 2015. My weight stays steady now between 120 and 125lbs. This weight is a good one for me at 5’4″.

Today!

There is no doubt that I am now enjoying the best health and shape of my entire life. I have had 5 years of amazing health. At age 57 I hike, swim, bike, carry all of my groceries home by hand and lift weights. In 3 weeks I will be climbing volcanoes in Guatemala. I am so grateful to Dr. Wahls, for sharing this diet with us! It is exciting to heal and regain my health using nutrient-dense real food and other natural therapies. I love eating this way and hope to for the rest of my life. Go ahead and give this a try! You have nothing to lose except for some extra pounds, toxins and illness!

My passion lies in helping others with similar health issues. If you would like a little extra help, I offer nutritional therapy consultations and hair tissue mineral analysis for a fee. Please go to this page for a list of my rates and to book an appointment for health coaching.

Everything we eat has the power to heal or kill us. This recipe is super healthy and easy to make. Now is the time to throw out all of the commercially prepared toxic salad dressings that you have in your fridge. This vinaigrette does not require refrigeration and goes well on almost every salad.
By 2007, my health had reached an all-time low. I was given a chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia diagnosis. I was on heavy psychiatric medications for bipolar disorder, major anxiety, chronic migraines and post-traumatic stress disorder. Most days I relied on painkillers for my increasing levels of pain. By this time I had been sick for over fourteen years. My life was a constant battle to find some kind of stability in the midst of symptoms that included the following:

severe body aches

headaches

migraines

ongoing constipation

intense head pressure

chronic coughing

extreme fatigue

overall body weakness

depression

suicidal ideation

anaemia

weight gain

bloating

chronic left sided pain

dizziness

blurred vision

bloodshot eyes

dry skin

dry and brittle hair

ridged fingernails

body numbness and tingling

heart palpitations and shortness of breath

panic attacks

debilitating anxiety

chemical sensitivities

On many days, I was barely strong enough to sit up in a chair. I would put on a brave front at mealtime and afterward collapse onto a couch or my bed.

I went to several doctors and received little to no help. The psychiatric diagnosis comes with a bias that seems inclined towards, “you are depressed, and these are the symptoms of your depression,” or “these are the side effects of the drugs.” None of them ever asked me about my diet; no one seemed to be able to offer me a solution.

The problem with this approach is that a drug is seen as the answer: a new chemical, perhaps in combination with a different coping strategy will make life more bearable… without really addressing the underlying problem. And so, I was repeatedly told I was depressed and would have to put up with the side-effects of the medications – a necessary evil.

Finally realizing that the allopathic medical system could not offer real and lasting solutions, I decided to do a little research. Thank heavens for the internet. I knew that something had to change or I wasn’t going to live much longer. I spent many, many hours online, and discovered that the body is a highly adaptive self-healing system. If given the proper fuel, and toxins removed, the body can function the way that it was designed.

Researching online, I slowly began to understand that I needed a holistic approach – one that considered the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of chronic illness. Each aspect is equally important and needs to be addressed. What we eat, drink, think, breathe and believe have tremendous repercussions on the state of our health. Over time, I came to understand that wellness is like a three-legged stool. If one leg is broken, the whole stool will fall over and not function as designed.

The body is a self-healing system.

There were so many testimonials online from people who were healing themselves by taking a body-mind-spirit approach to finding optimal health. Intuitively, I knew this was the way for me. I became hopeful and determined to regain my health using natural interventions. Finally, I would start to address the cause instead of just getting treated for symptoms. It just made plain old common sense, the kind that my Baba (grandmother) from Ukraine would have used.

And so I began my return journey to health. Here are the major steps that were involved.

Remove the bad stuff

Processed foods and sugar

Foods that create allergy or intolerance – most common are gluten, dairy, soy, corn, eggs, shellfish and nuts

Amalgam dental fillings

Toxic drugs – I quit all psychiatric medications and painkillers in 2007 and began treating the mania and depression naturally. You can read more about this here.

Personal care products – Commercial body lotion, sunscreen, bug spray, toothpaste, make-up, hair care products, hair dyes, soaps, body scents and teeth whiteners, to name a few

Toxic household products – Heavily scented laundry detergents and fabric softeners, cleaning products

Environmental toxins – Of gassing from new furniture, carpets, new vehicle upholstery, fresh paint, mold in the home or workplace, EMF and dirty electricity exposure, cigarette smoke, air fresheners and scented candles

Chronic infections – I started with a bowel cleanse, treated parasites, and Lyme disease and co-infections.

Stress

Unhealthy relationships

Add the good stuff.

Natural supplements, probiotics, superfoods and herbs to target individual infections, address nutritional deficiencies, correct digestion and heal the gut.

Exercise that is enjoyable and you look forward to.

Spending as much time as possible in nature.

Sweating – sauna or naturally in a hot climate is ideal.

Straightening out the body – chiropractic therapy.

Laughter, fun and lots of love.

Living as simply and stress-free as possible.

Develop a loving relationship with a higher power.

This is what I have done to regain my health. It really seems like a daunting set of tasks. It began as a very steep learning curve and took me six years to complete them all. Why so long? Well, think of regaining your health like peeling back the layers of an onion. I just happened to be an onion with many, many layers.

I was very, very sick when I started to work at reversing my physical state. The report back from my first hair tissue mineral analysis looked like someone that was slowly starving to death. I was extremely low in all minerals except for two of them.

The slowest and most frustrating part of this entire process has been dealing with chronic infections; I spent about 4 years on this alone. I finally was diagnosed with Lyme and several co-infections in August 2012. I tried and failed with several different treatments for Lyme Disease and co-infections. I have now been in complete remission from everything since November 2014. I have just celebrated another year of Lyme Free Living! You can read about it here.

Some people may be restored to health in a relatively short time by changing their diet and perhaps doing one or two other things. I think it really depends on the level of toxicity, length of illness, nutritional deficiencies and level of damage to the body. In other words, there is no set timetable for recovery from illness. The body sets its own pace, based on what it needs.

It doesn’t seem fair for one person to have to deal with so many health-related issues. However, in many ways, my poor health was not unlike that of many others today. In a real sense, our health is a product of our times. And we are living today in what is probably the most toxic era in the history of humankind. Here are 12 Myths I Ignored to Recover 20 Years of Chronic Illness.

Despite this, it has all been worth it. The changes I’ve made have become a lifestyle that I wouldn’t give up for anything. To wake up each day without a headache or debilitating body pain and be able to walk five or six miles is a blessing beyond my wildest imagination. I am in complete remission from depression, mania, Lyme Disease, Fibromyalgia, all co-infections, hypothyroidism, chronic migraines, adrenal fatigue, anaemia and nutritional deficiencies, since November 2014. I have been medication-free since October 2007. Food is powerful medicine!

It’s true, I travel with a blender! Green smoothies are the ticket! I can’t believe I am celebrating another year of Lyme Disease-free living. Prior to this, I had been chronically ill and medically disabled for over 20 years. I no longer suffer from Lyme Disease, Babesia, Bartonella, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Bipolar Disorder, Migraines, PTSD, Hypoglycemia or Adrenal Fatigue. If you are new to my page and have been battling Lyme Disease you can read this article to find out all that I did to recover from 20 years of chronic illness.

A Look at the Past Year

Writer’s block

It was a very full year with a lot of twists and turns. I know I haven’t written much but there is a good reason for that. After completing my grueling work/study year with the Nutritional Therapy Association last November 2017 I just couldn’t bring myself to write much of anything. Nada! Zilch! A blogger that doesn’t blog! I am hoping that this will change soon as I still have many things I would like to write about.

Typhoid Fever

One year ago, I got blindsided by Typhoid Fever one week after I wrote my final exam with the NTA. It was quite unexpected, and I went undiagnosed for 10 days. Blood tests came up empty, and I was told it was Dengue. You can read more about this experience here. I suspect raw chopped garlic saved my life and provided the antibiotic that I so desperately needed. Once I recovered, it took me about 3 months to get strong again. I have never had such a serious acute infection as this. They say what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger and I feel this rang true for me.

Cancelled Kilimanjaro

I was supposed to climb Kili last January. I knew I was just too weak from the Typhoid and had to put this dream on hold. This really was a big disappointment but I knew it was the sensible thing to do. I returned here to Playa del Carmen to work and focus on self-care.

The Overdevelopment of Playa del Carmen

I went through a low time following my return here after this past Christmas. Playa has changed so much in the last 6 years that I have been coming here. This building boom has forever changed this once small and quaint tourist destination. Many of the authentic Mexican restaurants and quaint hotels have been torn down and replaced with massive hotels or condominiums. The traffic has increased exponentially, and 5th Avenue is full of people at all hours. It is noisy and busy morning and night.

The Carribean Sargassum Problem

This last year has been a rough one for the beaches. The sargassum seaweed just kept rolling into the shallows and piling up on shore. I swam very little, as most days, the seaweed came in faster than it could be removed. You could smell it rotting, all the way up to 5th Avenue. The beaches at my end of town were completely deserted. This last month, the seaweed has cleared for the most part, and we are back to enjoying the sea again. I am so grateful for this reprieve of sargassum. It really has made me appreciate my beach days on the weekends.

Ecuador

Discouraged over the state of Playa del Carmen, I set out last Spring on a quest to find a new home – a place with clean air, water, and food. I spent 10 weeks working as a digital nomad and exploring on my 3 day weekends. I started in Quito and then went to Baños, Cuenca and finally Vilcabamba. I hiked, went whitewater rafting, horseback riding, canyoning and soaked in volcanic thermal baths. It was a really interesting trip and I did so much while I was there. The food was incredible and I loved the people. It is a very affordable country and I now understand why so many expats go there to retire. I absolutely love Ecuador but just never found the right place that I could call home.

Two broken ribs

I was hiking one afternoon in Baños and fell on a wet rock! Going down, I could hear my ribs crack! I then had to hike out about 4 km. I haven’t experienced pain like that since giving birth. I could barely breathe, and getting in and out of bed was excruciating. Slowly, as the weeks went on the pain lessened. In the third week, I was hiking again in Cuenca and then did lots more in Vilcabamba (I discovered that I could hike but had to be very careful bending and sitting). Hiking is my most favorite thing to do, and I wasn’t going to let the broken ribs stop me from enjoying the many mountainous trails that Ecuador has to offer. I had to give away my blender, as I couldn’t lift my carry-on anymore. That ended my traveling green smoothies. The cleaning lady in Vilcabamba was really thrilled to get my blender.

Mini- makeover of my apartment in Playa

My little apartment in Playa was starting to look dull and tired. I had the whole place painted, bought a new table and chairs, sofa, and had my bed and nightstand painted white. A few pictures were hung, and the whole place got a lift. It is amazing what a good de-cluttering and new paint can do to a place. I have always loved this little apartment and I love it that much more now. It will be for rent for a 6 month period this year, as I travel from March – September 2019. Comes with a great blender and Berkey water filter. Drop me a line if you are interested.

Mexico City

I spent 10 days in Mexico City for my birthday in September. It was a wonderful break from work, and I was blessed to be with my girlfriend Jackie. We climbed pyramids, visited museums, walked and walked, enjoyed lots of good food and just had a great time. We stayed right in the historical center. I love Mexico and really enjoy visiting new places here.

Maintained a Full Caseload of Clients

I have been very fortunate to be able to work and travel. I know it looks like I don’t work but I actually work quite a lot. I have been blessed with so many wonderful people to work with. It is a privilege and a blessing to help others heal from chronic illness. I address terrain first. Then we begin cleansing and reducing the infectious load. Many are recovering and that is what is so encouraging.

My maintenance protocol

My diet is primarily Wahl’s Paleo. I still eat about 9 cups of vegetables each day. After 5 years of morning smoothies, I have switched to a big salad with some type of animal protein for breakfast. I have almost quit fruit altogether and only eat it occasionally. I just feel stronger and have better blood sugar balance without much fruit. This is my 5th year with intermittent fasting. My first meal is at 11 am and dinner is usually around 5 pm. I still have my morning black coffee and drink water the rest of the day. I am careful to give my body everything it needs to be healthy. This includes minerals, essential fatty acids, whole food multivitamins, digestive supports, seaweed and whatever else my bi-annual hair test suggests.

Regular parasite cleansing

I hadn’t done a parasite cleanse in over a year. Coming back from Ecuador, I felt kind of depleted. So when I returned to Canada last summer, I began a parasite cleanse. Lo and behold, there were some visible parasites. I cleansed full dose with my recipe for 6 weeks and couldn’t believe how much stronger I felt. My recipe can be found here. The parasite herbs are the only herbs that I take every 6 months. I haven’t taken any Lyme specific herbs since October 2014.

Daily exercise

I continue to walk 6 – 8 miles, at least 3 days per week. The other 3 days I do 45 – 60 minutes of resistance training. I feel really good and have been steadily gaining muscle that I lost while recovering from the broken ribs.

Canada

I return home to Canada twice each year now. I love to visit my family at Christmas and in the summer. They come to visit me here as well, which is always such a blessing. I am so grateful for Skype and being able to keep in touch with regular calls.

Gratitude

My life is full today! It is not always easy to look back on the years of suffering, financial ruin, lost time and being mostly unsupported. I often can’t believe that it has been 4 years since that nightmare ended. It still haunts me at times.
One thing I know for sure! In order to have great health, we must feed ourselves a nutrient-dense whole food diet, reduce toxins and lower the infectious load. I am now in the best shape and health of my entire 56 years. I still have a few mountains left to climb, and plan on living life to the fullest for the rest of my days!

Every Saturday morning during the summer months in Canada, we head down to our local farmers’ market. It is a special time to chat with our farmers and pick up all the produce we need for the coming week. From there, we purchase our homemade gluten-free sausage, bacon and free range eggs. I absolutely love this way of buying our food – directly from the farmer, beekeeper, maple syrup producer, vegetable grower and butcher. This is where we are able to buy real food. We also buy a half side of organic grass-fed beef and our free range chickens twice per year. When I am in Mexico, I seek out the freshest fruits and vegetables from a variety of open-air markets and grocery stores. I shop almost daily for the freshest ingredients for my green smoothies.

About 70 percent of it is an edible food-like substance, full of chemicals, sugar and other sweeteners, modified corn, flavour enhancers, bad fats and preservatives. These substances will actually harm and not heal the body. These fake foods don’t contain the essential body nutrients to repair the body and maintain great health. Since we are all about healing, we are going to talk about seeking out real food and discovering the health benefits of eating a clean, nutrient-dense diet.

Let food be your medicine and your medicine be your food.

-Hippocrates

Characteristics to look for…

1. Real Food only has one ingredient.
That’s right. An avocado only contains an avocado. It is purchased in bulk and paid for at the cash.

2. Real Food doesn’t have a label, doesn’t come in a box, wrapper and preferably not a can.
This way, we do not have to worry about reading labels and contending with a lot of added salt, sugar, preservatives, chemicals or dyes. There are a few exceptions we have to make if we want to consume certain foods. Sardines come to mind. We also purchase vinegar and olive oil in glass bottles, coffee in a package. Yes, I still enjoy my organic black coffee and that’s not going to change anytime soon. Loose tea also comes in a package for those that enjoy a cuppa.

Deciding to make real food the heart of our diet leads to choices about what goes and what stays. After deciding to go the real food route, we looked at the prepared “foods” in our kitchen cupboard – the ones that can sit on a shelf for a year – and threw most of them in the garbage. Fixtures of the (SAD) Standard American Diet such as breakfast cereals need preservatives to maintain a long shelf life. These and similar food products are usually loaded with sugar and chemicals that will not help to create great health.

3. Real Food can be found in the perimeter of a grocery store.
Learn to just navigate the outer areas of the grocery store, where you’ll find fruits, vegetables, meats and eggs. We prefer to buy organic and free range from local farmers, but not everyone has access to these. We all have to do the best we can with what is available. When we shop at a grocery store, we’ll typically arrive at the cash register with a cart full of fruits and vegetables. We only venture into the middle aisles for things like coffee, tea, olive oil, freezer bags and yes, on occasion those sardines.

4. Real Food as made by God.
Much of the produce in our stores is chemically or artificially ripened, or its appearance changed in some way. In some places, there are still available heritage varieties of fruits and vegetables along with others that have not been altered in any way. These come in their natural color and state. No dyes or waxes applied. I love the fruits and vegetables in Mexico because the oranges look authentic – not dyed to a perfect orange color. Again, we have to do the best we can where we are, to feed ourselves with what’s available.

5. Real Food has not been genetically modified.
Genetically modified organisms, otherwise known as GMOs, are organisms whose genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found there. The best way to ensure that your food is not a GMO is to either grow it yourself or buy directly from a farmer who is growing heritage or non-GMO varieties. In this way, your dollars help support farmers who are growing health-giving foods. Try and stay away from the “GMOs,” sometimes referred to as “Frankenfoods,” which have been linked to disease. I avoid the most common ones such as corn, soy, canola (oil), sugar beets (sugar) and alfalfa.

6. Real Food is organically grown.
In best case scenarios, real food is grown in rich soil without the use of pesticides, herbicides or other unnatural interventions. Organically raised animals are NOT given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal byproducts. If you can’t find or afford organic, just buy regular fruits and vegetables. I often buy non-organic fruit and vegetables because I live in areas where these are not abundant. And although my preference is for the organic, I was able to heal just fine eating the regular stuff most of the year. Don’t stress, just do your best.

7. Real Food needs to be prepared.
Learn how to cook, and make time to prepare your own food – every day. We have lost this important skill, and are relying way too much on additive-laden convenience foods at meal times. It is difficult for a person who is sick to cook their own meals. However, there are simple and easy-to-prepare dishes that are much more nutritious and beneficial to our health than processed foods. Eating real food prepared in your own home will help you to heal, and you will have so much more energy.

Remember – We are looking for real food that is nutrient-dense and will heal the body, not harm it. Our diet should consist of good (unaltered) fats, carbohydrates, proteins that contain all of the necessary vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids. We need these for healing and optimal performance.

When I eat junk, I feel like junk!

When I eat well, I feel well!

Now that I have my health back, I will never go back to my old (SAD) Standard American Diet way of eating. I am sold on a nutrient dense diet – the Paleo Diet, to be exact. I now have lots of energy and can do the things that I want to do. It is important to break the cycle of eating junk foods. I know that when I eat junk, I feel like junk. When I eat well, I feel well. It takes time to heal a nutrient-depleted body but well worth the effort.

Blessings and Best of Health!

I used to dream of not being sick anymore. I always knew I would get here but never thought it would take so long. I was so determined to heal myself or die trying. This journey has been so painful, lonely and at times despairing. I literally have fought for my life for a very long time. I remember back in 2009, when the first picture (above) was taken. I had just had my amalgam fillings removed and was in the thick of parasite cleansing. I often looked older and would turn 50 shades of yellow and orange. My liver was struggling to keep up with the toxic overload from the lyme and from parasite die-off. My hair was thinning and my skin was very dry. I was completely exhausted every single day of my life. At one point, I went to see a naturopathic doctor. She took my chi pulse, stared at me and said, “You barely have a chi pulse; you’re living on sheer will alone.”

I believe I am here today because God wants me here. No other reason. I did say that if I got well, I would help those with chronic illness for the rest of my life. So here I am. This blog is only seven weeks old and I am so excited to share all that I have experienced and learned about natural health these last seven years.

The past twelve months have been both amazing and scary. I experienced great success following the Wahls Paleo Diet, Buhner’s Lyme Protocol, with intensive parasite cleansing and by taking other steps toward recovering my health.

Grieving

Prior to this year, I had been sick for over twenty years, and along the way had lost the ability to work, in 2004. There were so many losses during this period of my life. I remember this past summer standing in front of the mirror and wondering who I was, after all this time. My entire daily life for so long had been about survival. Being chronically ill had been my full-time job. Now that I was restored physically, it was a shock – like waking up from a twenty year nightmare and discovering that I needed to build a new life. I asked myself, “So now what?”

At the eight month mark of my remission, I began a time of grieving. It didn’t last long, but it was so painful. I am blessed to have a wonderful psychologist, Sister Mary, who helped me through this process. I had to feel the sadness of so many losses, and the intense anger at being misdiagnosed, medically misdirected and having to find my way alone. I received little useful help and years of damaging toxic drugs from those who were supposed to be looking out for my best health interests. I was now fully awake to the reality of so many atrocities being committed against the very vulnerable of society, of whose numbers I had been one – through misuse of pharmaceuticals, the food industry, toxic beauty products, fluoridated and chlorinated water, debilitating vaccines and with our environment being mercilessly polluted. I could go on and on but I won’t. I have decided to give this bigger battle to God. Let Go and Let God.

Solution focused

I decided to focus on what I have the power to change: like what I put into my mouth – purifying my water, enjoying some sun, getting some exercise, laughing with family and friends, helping others and enjoying each day as it comes. The way I fight back quietly is with my dollars. We don’t have much, but we still have to eat. I take my dollars to organic farmers, and support people doing something amazing. They are producing life-giving fruits, vegetables, meats and eggs. I stopped supporting the pharmaceutical companies seven years ago when I quit all of their toxic drugs, vaccines and mammograms. Instead, I use herbs, superfoods and natural therapies. I support massage therapists, herbalists, chiropractors, naturopathic doctors and psychologists. This is how as a collective we will bring about a change.

De-cluttered our house

We had been in the same house for the past eleven years. Due to my illness, neither of us had the time or energy to undertake such a monumental task. This summer, we cleaned out every drawer, cupboard, closet, storage room, furnace room, empty kids’ room, recreation room and our garage. We got rid of half of our stuff. For me it meant the beginning of something new. It meant out with the old and anything just holding us back. With each item I asked myself, “Do I use this? Do I love this?” And if the answer to both was “no”, then it either got sold or donated. It was sad in some ways to let-go of old memories, yet liberating and healing. Our house feels light and serene now. It feels hopeful! We are moving forward with our life.

Do not fear Lyme

Lyme is just a symptom of a body that has gone out of balance. It is a disease state that can be reversed with proper detoxification and nourishment. Like Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome it can be put into remission. Chronic infections can be eliminated and then, the body can begin to repair itself with the right nutrition. The body is a self-healing system. We just have to help it along.

Thoughts are powerful

Every day, I told myself that I was healing. Yes, every once in awhile I would get discouraged and yell at God and have a little pity party for one. But those never lasted long. I prayed for direction, courage and strength. The answers always came. Even if I tried something that didn’t end up working, at least I knew it didn’t work and could move on to something else. I always had a plan B, C and D. I got rid of resentments and forgave everyone for everything.

Relapse

I have relapsed twice before, after periods of wellness that were short-lived, lasting only a month or two. I have never had one full year. Someone recently asked me if I was afraid of relapse. I said “no.” I honestly don’t think I will relapse. After seeing my last hair tissue mineral analysis, and not having had any lyme symptoms for twelve months, I think I plan on staying right here. You can view my first hair analysis when I was very sick and depleted here. I am also getting stronger as the months go by, so I know my body is in the rebuilding phase. I can walk about five miles each morning before breakfast.

My life today

People tell me I look so much better and younger now. I sure feel young and vibrant. After living through what I have gone through, each day is a miracle. My youngest is almost eighteen, and my two daughters are now out on their own. They remain my constant source of joy and love. All three have beautiful hearts; they are intelligent and have a wicked sense of humor. My life is being redirected. I continue to work on core childhood wounds and past hurts. I am now socially active for the first time in over 20 years. I have formed many new friendships and enjoy each moment with these beautiful souls. I surround myself with positive people and have eliminated all unhealthy and negative relationships. This has made such a huge impact on my continuous state of well-being. I do the things that I love to do on a regular basis.

Mexico

I have returned to Mexico for the winter. I wanted to give myself some extra healing time in the intense heat and sun. Here, I have a modest apartment in a local neighborhood and am able to live a simple lifestyle that allows me to heal. I am also planning to open a guest house for others that want a place to come and enjoy a paleo diet with lots of beach therapy. I hope to have this up and running in the Fall of 2016.

Never ever give up

Healing takes time. I was sick for so many years. It is said that one needs a month of healing for every year a person is sick. I needed more, and made a few mistakes along the way; this is normal, and we all have to find what works best for us on this healing journey. The journey can be bitter, but the victory is sweet beyond imagining. I have never been so full of joy!
