Most people don’t want to think their chronic illness could be caused by parasites. However, the two are often found together. We can pick up parasites in many ways: by living and working with animals, through international travel, poor sanitation, food or water, swimming in streams and lakes, poor hygiene, working in daycare facilities or via a weakened immune system, to name a few.
I was very sick in 2009 and accidentally discovered that I had a serious parasite problem with roundworms, tapeworms, flukes and rope worms. Added to these were candida, Lyme Disease, Bartonella and Babesia. I experimented with many of the commercial herbal products on the market but found many of them too weak. I decided to make my own and was able to eliminate the parasites and later on, the Lyme Disease and co-infections using Stephen Buhner’s herbal protocol. The late Dr Hulda Clark emphasized three herbs that would kill all parasites at their different stages if taken together. So wormwood, black walnut and cloves became the foundation for my herbal parasite recipe. You can read more about parasites in this article.
“No matter how long and confusing is the list of symptoms a person has, from chronic fatigue to infertility to mental problems, I am sure to find only two things wrong: they have in them pollutants and or parasites.” ~ Dr Hulda Clark
1. Wormwood – Wormwood is the most powerful dewormer and has been used for thousands of years to expel tapeworms, threadworms, hookworms, pinworms and especially roundworms from dogs, cats and humans. Wormwood is a common ingredient in many herbal “cleansing” formulations.
Wormwood contains the toxins thujone and isothujone which kill parasites. Wormwood also contains santonin, known as a remedy for parasitic diseases. It is the second most bitter herb known to humankind and has been proven a POWERFUL remedy for malaria. Wormwood also contains sesquiterpene lactones, which work in a way similar to peroxide by weakening the parasites’ membranes and thereby killing them. Wormwood also helps produce bile, which in turn helps the liver and gallbladder.
If you suspect you or your child has been infested with worms, it really is best to seek professional help. It has been said that wormwood should not be used long-term and if parasites are persistent the wormwood can be cycled with other herbs to provide a break. This is my personal favorite!
2. Black walnut – Black Walnut is very effective against tapeworms, pinworms, candida albicans (yeast infections) and malaria. It is also effective in reducing sugar levels and helping the body rid itself of toxins. The dried and ground green hull of the Black Walnut contains tannin which is an organic iodine as well as juglandin, juglone and juglandic acids. It has been used for centuries to expel various types of worms including parasites that cause skin irritations – such as ringworm. It oxygenates the blood, which also helps to kill parasites. Black Walnut is a natural source of iodine – something in which many of us with chronic infections and various forms of cancer are deficient.
We make our own black walnut tincture. We simply fill a mason jar with green black walnuts( pictured above) and fill the jar with vodka (40% alcohol). We let it sit on the counter for 3 – 6 months and strain off the walnuts. You now have a VERY STRONG tincture that only costs the price of the vodka. I have to avoid alcohol so I use the powdered black walnut hull, which also works very well.
3. Cloves – Cloves contain eugenol, caryophyllene, and tannins which have powerful anti-microbial properties – these components are what actually travel in the bloodstream killing microscopic parasites and all parasitic larvae and eggs. Eugonal is one of the most powerful anti-microbial agents known. Eugonal kills all microscopic protoza and removes parasite eggs at every stage of development. Cloves are tremendously effective in killing malaria, tuberculosis, cholera, scabies and other parasitic infections as well as viruses, bacteria and fungi, including candida. Cloves also destroy pseudomonas aeruginosa, all species of Shigella, staph and strep.
4. Olive leaf powder – Its active ingredient is a phenolic compound known as Oleuropein (also commercially extracted from the leaves of olive trees). Olive leaf has been used as a medicinal herb for thousands of years. It is effective against viruses, retroviruses, bacteria, spirochetes, rickettsiae, chlamydiae, fungi, yeasts, molds, protozoa, helminths and other parasites.
5. Cat’s claw – Native to Central and South America, cat’s claw has been used for hundreds of years in traditional folk medicine to treat a variety of health complaints. It has proven helpful with Crohn’s disease, gastritis and duodenal ulcers, intestinal inflammation, parasites, and balancing intestinal flora. It is also one of the main core herbs in Stephen Buhner’s Lyme Protocol.
6. Garlic – Garlic is known to slow and kill more than 60 types of fungi and 20 types of bacteria, as well as some of the most potent viruses known to humans. Garlic also has a history of killing parasites, controlling secondary fungal infections, detoxifying while gently stimulating elimination, and has antioxidant properties to protect against oxidation resulting from parasite toxins.
Allicin and Ajoene are the components in garlic that kill parasites (including one-cell varieties), as well as pinworms and hookworms. Allicin is not present in garlic in its natural state. When garlic is chopped or otherwise damaged, the enzyme alliinase acts on the chemical alliin contained in its fibres, converting it into allicin. Ajoene is the principal compound responsible for garlic’s anticoagulant properties and contributes to its strong odor.
Garlic has properties that are antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiprotozoal, and antiparasitic. It kills: B. subtilis, E. coli, P. mirabilis, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella enteritidis, methicillin-resistant Staph aureus, Staph faecalis, and V. cholerae, Staphylococcus, Escherichia, Proteus, Salmonella, Providencia, Citrobacter, Klebsiella, Hafnia, Aeromonas, Vibrio and Bacillus genera. Garlic is also very effective against Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. Garlic has also been known to eliminate Candida albicans.
7. Cascara Sagrada– Cascara Sagrada stimulates wavelike contractions of the large intestine. For this reason, it has been used to help expel parasites through these wavelike actions in the lower intestines and is highly recommended for their removal. It also has anti-viral properties. Cascara Sagrada is considered one of the safest laxative herbs and is useful in detoxifying the colon.
8. Pau D’Arco – Pau d’arco also has a long history in herbal medicine around the world. In South American herbal medicine, it is considered to be astringent, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic and laxative; it is used to treat ulcers, syphilis, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal problems, candida and yeast infections, cancer, diabetes, prostatitis, constipation, and allergies. It is also a powerful antioxidant.
9. Andrographis – Andrographis paniculata is a kind of new old kid on the block. It is a herb native to the Indian subcontinent and used in Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of health treatment and longevity. Both the fresh and dried Andrographis leaves as well as the fresh juice of the whole Andrographis plant have been widely used in traditional remedies and folkloric medicines for liver disorders, children’s bowel complaints, colic pain, cases of general debility, and convalescence after fevers. It is also used as a stomachic, anthelmintic, antiperistaltic, and antispasmodic.
” A Broad-based or Shotgun Approach”
These 9 herbs are not just effective for parasites. They are also very helpful for treating many viruses, bacteria and fungi including candida. This is why I chose to treat my Lyme Disease, viruses, parasites and candida with herbs. Herbs, each with a unique spectrum of antimicrobial properties contain a wide array of chemical compounds that target, suppress and/or kill microbes in different ways. Resistance by pathogens to herbs and their varied antimicrobial properties is almost unheard of, even with long-term use. Unfortunately, the allopathic medical model mostly uses drugs and antibiotics to treat these conditions. Drugs have shown limited success and are hard on the liver, kidneys and gut microbiome. The current medical opinion fails to acknowledge that these parasitic infections commonly exist among first world populations. However, if these conditions were not so prevalent, online forums would not be filled with thousands of people looking for ways to eliminate these organisms and accompanying infections.
I used several herbs at once, and in this way was able to reduce my pathogenic load enough so that my body could begin to heal itself. Proper diet, mineral replacement and reducing toxins were also important elements in successfully recovering my vitality. I am currently in remission from parasites, Lyme and co-infections since November 2014 and enjoying the best health I have known in over 30 years.
Blessings and Best of Health!

Brenda,
I just recently got results back from my food sensitivity test. Pau d’arco was one of the functional med herbs I react to unfortunately. And worse, I’d JUST made your protocol for parasites. This said, can you recommend a replacement for Pau d’arco in your protocol, or is it just fine to leave it out and use the other herbs? Also sadly I react to beets. So, adios to your beet kvass I’d just grown to love. wah wah wah! 🙂 Thanks again so much!
Snowgirl,
Just leave out the Pau d’arco. The other herbs will work just fine. The main ones are wormwood, black walnut and cloves.
Think saurkraut instead of the kvass.
Keep going!
